The French philosopher Gabrielle Halpern published a column in the media Ouest France in which she shares her vision of artificial intelligence, and more precisely of generative artificial intelligence. What does it reveal about our society and about our humanité? What kind of new ethics does it create?
"When it comes to artificial intelligence, rather than adopting a technophile or technophobic approach, it's interesting to ask what it reveals about us, our society, and our humanity. If a generative artificial intelligence tool like ChatGPT has more empathy than doctors, more patience than teachers, more imagination than lawyers, more kindness than our neighbors, more tolerance than our friends, and more listening skills than our parents, shouldn't this shake us up, as we relearn patience, empathy, listening, tolerance, kindness, and imagination?", Gabrielle Halpern
"The real question we must ask ourselves about artificial intelligence is this: aren't we, human beings, the ones who have abandoned the ground of humanism, and isn't it rather absurd to now cry scandal about the great replacement of human beings by technology? Lacking the courage to embrace our humanity, isn't it all too easy to delegate it to artificial intelligence? Generative artificial intelligence shines a spotlight on our failures, our contradictions, our absurdities. By playing the role of our "guilty conscience," it radically challenges us.", Gabrielle Halpern
"As part of a research project on the world of work that I conducted in partnership with the Andicat association and the Cité de l'économie et des métiers de demain in France, a worker with a mental disability told me: "Yes, I'm slow, but I do my job well, and at the end of the day, no one has to go over my work. I want the right to be slow." This "right to be slow" might seem impossible in the world of work... And yet! Why do we refuse to allow time for the proper completion of work and why are we willing to waste countless hours in acute meetings and absurd administrative procedures? Shouldn't the choices we make about how we allocate our time resources, on an individual, professional, and social level, be called into question? It's what we devote our time to that reveals what we value. This "right to slowness," which can raise a smile, is not trivial and represents a profound question for our society. With generative artificial intelligence saving us time, this question will become essential... What will we do with this time? We will be confronted with the question of what is worth our time, and what isn't. New technologies will, in fact, reshuffle the deck of our choices", Gabrielle Halpern
"In The Master and Margarita – a true masterpiece – the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov tells us about the arrival on Earth of the devil who comes to interfere in the affairs of human beings and turn everything upside down, revealing their greed, their superficiality, their wickedness… Revealed to themselves in their worst light, the characters are forced to ask themselves: is it not time to mend their ways and stop behaving badly? Paradoxically, everything happens as if the devil is forcing them to become better. By giving us a lesson in humility, but also in tolerance, listening, attention, kindness, patience, artificial intelligence will perhaps help us, if we have the courage, to rediscover and embrace our humanity", Gabrielle Halpern
